Fleur De Lis Valentine Necklace

Living here in New Orleans, we are surrounded by Fleur De Lis. They are everywhere! It is the beautiful symbol of our city. So you see lots of fleur de lis jewelry, and of course I had to make some of my own when I found these adorable little sterling silver charms.

I created this necklace using all sterling silver chain, wire, rings and clasp. The rings have a lovely patina to them. I used little 4mm swirly pink heart beads, and little crystal clear rainbow coated tearcrop beads. I accented them with little tiny glass delica beads and some small round sterling silver beads also. There is a single fleur de lys charm in sterling silver. This necklace measures 15.75 inches.

Storyville Photos

I myself am learning more about New Orleans and her history, so I thought I would share. :)

E.J. Bellocq
was a photographer who photographed Storyville. After his death, many of his photos and slides were destroyed, but the Storyville photos were found hidden in a sofa. Many of the faces of the women in the nude photographs were scratched out, and a lot of the photos were damaged, but you can still see some of his work here and there. Some of his pictures can be seen at Masters of Photography E. J. Bellocq.

Do you remember the movie Pretty Baby with Brook Shields? Well it was based on Lulu White the infamous madame and her brothel, and E.J.Bellocq was played by Keith Carradine. It is quite the controversial film, but nonetheless is a great look into what Storyville was like.

Here are a couple of his images. You can use your imagination as to what these ladies tales were...

The New Orleans Public Library

New Orleans is filled with history, and you can learn all about it by checking out the exhibits at the New Orleans Public Library.

They have over 40,000 images of New Orlean's colorful past, including information about Storyville, the red light district when prostitution was illegal.

Bourbon street was a lot tougher back then, it was a wilder place!

For example, you can learn about Lulu White: "brothel madam, procuress and entrepreneur in New Orleans, Louisiana during the Storyville period. An eccentric figure, she was noted for her love of jewelry, her many failed business ventures, and her rap sheet that extended in New Orleans as far back as 1880."

Remember kids, BOOKS, not booze. Learning is good!

Cheers!

Chalmette Coke Bust

These guys must have been making some serious Halloween treats! And we're not talking candy apples. But you might need a razor blade for this candy.

drug bust

The four were arrested after military police in the area noticed two men visiting an Arabi convenience store multiple times early Tuesday morning to purchase baggies and baking soda, the Sheriff's Office said.

The military police took down a license plate number and passed the information along to sheriff's deputies. The arrests were made a Chalmette house, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies recovered "multiple pounds of cocaine'' and $80,000 cash inside the house, the Sheriff's Office said. link

But I always go to the Circle K for baggies and who doesn't need baking soda. (sarcasm)

Couple of geniuses, there, no doubt! Yikes.

But I wonder, did found any heads on the stove, or limbs in the oven? Damn druggies. Now people are just going to have to drink more booze on Halloween!

Woman charged with shooting at daughter's ex-boyfriend

Go ahead and file this one under, "wish there was a video of it." I'd pay to see a COPS style video remake of this incident.

Anyone who has watched New Orleans news, knows how wild things get down here.

According to WWLTV:
A Madisonville woman has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder after taking her shotgun and shooting at the car of her daughter’s ex-boyfriend, according to St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies.

That part lets you know the basics...

Anthonia Montairo Catoire-Miller, 33, was driving with three of her teenage children in Madisonville when she spotted her 16-year-old daughter’s ex-boyfriend standing with a group of friends.

Teens with ex boyfriends. lolz

She could have just kept going, but no...
After driving past the group, she stopped her vehicle and backed up to where they were standing.

She didn't even bother getting out of the vehicle. LOL
According to Captain George Bonnett, Catoire-Miller then took out a shotgun and fired one shot in the direction of the ex-boyfriend, missing him. She then parked her vehicle in a nearby driveway and walked with her children to her home at 70 Oak Park Dr.

Catoire-Miller was extremely irate when deputies, who were responding to a 911 call, arrived on the scene. They handcuffed her and placed her in the rear of a patrol car, but she used her legs to kick out one of the car’s rear windows. They were able to subdue her by tazing her.

She kicked out the window of a cop car? woah
Deputies found a live shotgun shell in her brassiere and the shotgun was found in her home.

Catoire-Miller was charged with attempted second-degree murder, simple criminal damage to property, resisting an officer, taking contraband to and from a penal institution and two contempt of court warrants.

I thought women only kept ammo in their bras in the movies? Guess I was wrong. Again.

This is a classic case of some down south redneck mom gone crazy stuff man. You couldn't write it for a horror movie.

Landrieu vs Kennedy Debate

After watching Senator Mary Landrieu debate Republican state Treasurer John Kennedy tonight on television, I am going to Vote Barack Obama and Landrieu.

The two main contenders in the U.S. Senate race swapped jabs at their first debate, in a race that has become increasingly negative and attack-oriented.

Attack adds from both Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu and her opponent, Republican state Treasurer John Kennedy, have been airing for the past several weeks.

Landrieu calls Kennedy a political opportunist who switched parties last year to try to help him win the Senate seat. Kennedy called Landrieu a tax-and-spend liberal who doesn't represent Louisiana values and who was part of an ineffective Washington political system.

"I'm going to continue to say my opponent is confused," Landrieu said. "It's the kindest thing I actually can say about him because otherwise I'd have to say he's an opportunist."

"I'm not confused," Kennedy responded. "I think Mary just thinks all conservatives are confused."

Landrieu framed herself as a moderate who has bucked her Democratic Party on votes that were critical to Louisiana. Kennedy framed himself as a conservative reformer pushing change.

Monday's debate at the Press Club of Baton Rouge is the first of four planned meetings between Landrieu and Kennedy. The election is November 4.

Can't wait until the election! Wish I was in Vegas with Jennifer Lopez having drinks right now.

New Orleans is Sinking

Its true! The glaciers melted and all that sediment flowed down the river...

But not to worry, they say only about 3 feet of sinkage in the next 200 years. We'll be long gone by then!

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Heavy sediment deposited in the Mississippi River delta in the last ice age has caused New Orleans to sink and will continue to drag down coastal Louisiana bit by bit for hundreds of years, according to a new study by NASA and Louisiana State University scientists.

The study, published recently in Geophysical Research Letters, adds an important perspective to the puzzle of natural and human factors complicating the effort to save New Orleans.

The weight of glacial period sediments has caused coastal Louisiana to sink between .04 inches and 0.3 inches a year and will continue to do so for hundreds of years, the study said. New Orleans, it said, will sink about 0.17 inches a year, or nearly three feet over the next 200 years.

Parts of the city are 5-10 feet below sea level now.

"It's sort of one of these processes that you can't stop," said Erik Ivins, a scientist with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and the study's lead researcher.

The study was done by comparing a 60-year-old catalog of elevation measurements in coastal Louisiana to a model of the Earth's crust over the past 750,000 years that calculated the rate of sinking by both the weight of sea level rise and the flow of sediments into the Gulf of Mexico. The mathematical study corroborates a theory that the Mississippi's sediment load has contributed to sinking in coastal Louisiana.

The heavy load of ancient sediment is found here because coastal Louisiana was the drainage point for the entire North American ice sheet during much of the last glacial period, about 22,000 years ago, Ivins said.

The massive sediment slug was pushed downriver by advancing glaciers and it is still working its way down the Mississippi each year, researchers said.

Scientists have known for a long time that New Orleans is sinking, but recent advances using Global Positioning System technology and updated geodetic data have deepened the understanding of the geophysical forces at play.

The challenge will be to take what science has to offer to help save New Orleans, said Roy Dokka, executive director of LSU's Center for GeoInformatics and one of the study's researchers.

"We have to build smart. We also have to make sure that we understand what's happening exactly," Dokka said. "If we get the science and engineering right, we can save New Orleans for hundreds of years."

Measuring how much the land may sink is critical for the Army Corps of Engineers. It is embarking on a massive effort to build up levees and flood defenses around New Orleans and the surrounding region of swamps and marshes that are home to fishermen, Cajun culture and such critical infrastructure as ports and oil refineries.

Factors clouding New Orleans' future are formidable: The sea may rise by 3 feet over the next century because of global warming; hurricanes have destroyed important bulwark-like wetlands and barrier islands; ongoing human activities such as oil extraction are causing land loss; and the building of levees actually speed up subsidence.

Scientists are busy trying to evaluate the risks. That work was helped by Hurricane Katrina, which acted as a catalyst for scientific inquiries.

"I wouldn't say anybody was wandering through the dark before, but there is a better body of knowledge, both big picture and detailed," said Ed Link, a University of Maryland engineer who's led corps' efforts to study and improve levee building in the storm's wake.
